PIP AND SPIKE

Sometimes the most unusual friends make the most unforgettable adventures.

Hidden deep in the Australian bush, where gum trees sway in the breeze and crystal clear creeks sparkle beneath the sunshine, lives Pip, a curious young platypus who loves exploring every bend of the river.

Not far away lives Spike, a cheerful little echidna who spends his days sniffing out tasty ants and digging little holes wherever his nose leads him.

Although they couldn't look more different, one loves swimming and the other prefers dry land, the two soon discover they have something very important in common.

They both love adventures.

Together they'll explore the bush, meet fascinating Australian animals, solve unexpected problems, and learn that being different is one of the greatest things about making new friends.

Chapter 1

Pip the young platypus loved mornings.

As the sun peeked over the gum trees, he splashed through the cool creek, diving beneath the water and searching for tiny insects to eat with his soft duck-like bill.

Nearby, on the riverbank, a little echidna was busy sniffing the ground.

Sniff.

Sniff.

Dig!

His long sticky tongue flicked into an ant nest before disappearing again.

"Mmm... breakfast!" he smiled.

Pip poked his head out of the water.

"I've never seen anyone eat like that before!"

The little echidna laughed.

"And I've never seen anyone with a bill like yours!"

"I'm Pip."

"I'm Spike."

They smiled at each other.

"I think we're going to be friends."

Chapter 2

The next morning, Pip invited Spike to explore the creek.

Spike carefully stepped onto a fallen log.

"I don't really like swimming," he admitted.

"That's alright," Pip smiled.

"I'll swim, and you can walk beside me."

Together they explored hidden bends in the river.

Pip discovered tiny freshwater shrimp.

Spike found colourful beetles and interesting footprints in the mud.

Although they travelled in different ways, they always stayed together.

Chapter 3

As they explored, a family of kangaroos watched them.

"Look!"

"A platypus and an echidna!"

"They're both very unusual."

Pip looked puzzled.

"What do you mean?"

An old kangaroo smiled.

"You two belong to a very special group of animals."

Spike tilted his head.

"Really?"

"Yes," she said.

"You're both mammals, just like us."

"But unlike almost every other mammal in the world..."

"...you both lay eggs!"

Pip and Spike looked at one another with wide eyes.

"We do?"

Then they burst into laughter.

"We really are unusual!"

Chapter 4

That afternoon, Spike asked,

"Have you ever wondered why people think we're so strange?"

Pip grinned.

"Maybe because I have a duck-like bill."

"And maybe because I'm covered in prickles."

They laughed again.

Just then, a wise old wombat wandered past.

"You know," he said,

"The best thing about being different..."

"...is that nobody else gets to be exactly like you."

Pip smiled proudly.

"I like that."

"So do I," said Spike.

Chapter 5

One hot afternoon, many of the bush animals searched for water.

A little possum became worried.

"The creek is too deep for me."

Pip had an idea.

"I'll look for a safe crossing."

He swam up and down until he found some large stepping stones hidden beneath the water.

Spike carefully tested each stone.

"They're safe!"

Soon the possum family crossed without getting wet.

"Thank you!" they cheered.

Everyone smiled.

Pip's swimming and Spike's careful feet had made the perfect team.

Chapter 6

The following day, Pip and Spike decided to see who could find the most interesting thing in the bush.

Pip discovered a smooth blue feather beside the creek.

Spike uncovered a shiny gum nut hidden beneath some leaves.

Then Pip spotted something sparkling in the water.

"It looks like treasure!"

The two friends hurried over.

It wasn't treasure at all.

It was a tiny dragonfly trapped inside an old spider's web that had blown into the creek.

Carefully, Pip nudged the web with his bill while Spike gently pulled it loose with his claws.

The dragonfly buzzed happily into the sky.

"You've saved me!"

The friends smiled.

Helping others was better than finding treasure.

Chapter 7

One evening, heavy rain began to fall.

The little creek grew wider and faster.

Spike couldn't cross back to his burrow.

"Don't worry," Pip called.

"I know another way!"

He led Spike along the bank until they reached a sturdy fallen tree stretching across the water.

Spike carefully padded across while Pip swam below, making sure everything was safe.

When they reached the other side, Spike gave Pip a big smile.

"I'm glad we're friends."

"So am I," Pip replied.

Chapter 8

The next morning, a group of young animals gathered around Pip and Spike.

"Is it true you both hatch from eggs?"

"Yes," Pip laughed.

"And we're both mammals too," Spike added.

The joeys gasped.

"That's amazing!"

"It means Australia is home to some of the rarest animals on Earth," said a wise old kookaburra.

Pip and Spike felt very proud.

Chapter 9

As the seasons changed, Pip and Spike explored more of the Australian bush together.

They climbed over rocks.

Followed butterflies.

Watched koalas sleeping high in the gum trees.

Listened to kookaburras laughing at sunrise.

Every adventure reminded them that the bush was full of wonderful surprises.

And there was always something new to discover.

One peaceful morning, Pip floated quietly in the creek while Spike searched for breakfast nearby.

Pip smiled.

"I used to think nobody else was as unusual as me."

Spike chuckled.

"I thought that too."

The wise old wombat wandered past once more.

"You've learnt an important lesson."

"What's that?" asked Pip.

"Being different isn't something to hide."

"It's something to celebrate."

Pip splashed his tail.

Spike grinned from ear to ear.

Together, the two unusual friends headed off on another adventure through the beautiful Australian bush, proving that the most extraordinary friendships are often the ones nobody expects.
