THE STRAWBERRY THAT SCREAMED

THE STRAWBERRY THAT SCREAMED

✨ Inspired by a magical story idea created by Sienna, May 2026 💜

Melia loved helping in the garden.

She loved muddy hands, tiny watering cans, and checking every morning to see if anything new had grown overnight.

But one sunny afternoon, she picked a strawberry that wasn’t ordinary at all.

Because the moment her mum rinsed it under the tap...

The strawberry screamed.

“AHHHH! TOO COLD!”

Tiny eyes blinked open.

Little leafy arms flailed dramatically.

And before anyone could even process what was happening, the strawberry shouted:

“PLEASE DON’T EAT ME!”

Then it bounced straight out of the sink and introduced itself as Rosberry.

Soon Melia, Mai, and Ariana discover their garden is hiding far more than talking fruit. Beneath the soil lives a secret underground world filled with glowing berries, sleepy potatoes, mushroom houses, giant root tunnels, and magical creatures protecting a mysterious flower called the Heart Blossom.

But the underground magic is beginning to fade.

Now the sisters and their tiny strawberry friend must work together to heal the Heart Blossom before the hidden garden loses its glow forever.

Chapter One

The Strawberry That Screamed

Melia loved strawberries more than almost anything.

Especially the tiny sweet ones growing in the garden planter outside the kitchen window.

Every morning she checked them carefully.

“Still green,” she sighed dramatically one Tuesday morning.

Mai peeked over the edge of the planter.

“You said that yesterday.”

“Because they were green yesterday too.”

Ariana laughed softly from the doorway.

“You know fruit takes time, right?”

Melia crossed her arms.

“I have waited my entire life.”

“You’re seven,” Ariana reminded her.

“Exactly.”

But finally, three days later, one strawberry turned bright red.

Perfectly red.

It almost sparkled in the sunlight.

Melia gasped.

“It’s READY.”

She picked it carefully from the stem and ran inside like she’d discovered treasure.

“Mum! Look!”

Her mum smiled from the sink.

“That one looks lovely.”

Melia proudly placed it into her hand.

Her mum rinsed it gently beneath the tap.

Then suddenly...

“AHHHHHHHHH!”

The scream echoed through the kitchen.

Melia dropped her spoon.

Mai nearly fell off her chair.

Ariana froze halfway through opening the fridge.

Everyone stared at each other.

Then the strawberry screamed again.

“STOP WASHING MEEEEEE!”

Chapter Two

The Tiny Face

The strawberry wriggled wildly in Mum’s hand.

Tiny little eyes blinked open near the leaves.

A mouth appeared.

Very dramatically.

“I CAN’T BREATHE UNDER THERE!”

Mum dropped the strawberry into the fruit bowl with a shriek.

The strawberry bounced upright angrily.

“Well THAT was rude.”

Nobody moved.

Nobody blinked.

Mai pointed slowly.

“The strawberry has a FACE.”

The strawberry placed tiny hands on its hips.

“Of course I have a face. How else would I scream?”

Melia stared in horror.

“I almost ate you.”

“Yes,” the strawberry replied. “A deeply upsetting experience for both of us.”

Ariana slowly crouched beside the fruit bowl.

“You can talk?”

“I can also sing,” said the strawberry proudly.

“Please don’t,” Mum whispered faintly.

The strawberry hopped onto the table.

Its tiny leafy top wobbled as it moved.

“My name,” it announced grandly, “is Rosberry.”

Mai burst into laughter.

“That sounds like a princess name.”

Rosberry lifted her chin proudly.

“Well, thank you.”

Melia leaned closer carefully.

“So... why are you alive?”

Rosberry suddenly looked nervous.

The tiny strawberry glanced toward the garden window.

Then lowered her voice.

“The roots are waking up.”

Chapter Three

Beneath the Garden

Nobody understood what that meant.

Especially Mum.

“I think I need tea,” she muttered weakly before sitting down.

Rosberry paced nervously across the table.

“You picked me too early.”

“You were red,” Melia argued.

“I KNOW I WAS RED.”

The strawberry sighed dramatically.

“Now the garden knows.”

Mai blinked.

“The garden knows what?”

Rosberry pointed toward the back door.

“That humans found us.”

Ariana exchanged a look with Melia.

“Us?”

Before she could answer, the kitchen floor trembled slightly.

Just once.

Tiny flowerpots rattled near the window.

Then came another sound.

A low humming noise.

Almost like singing.

The girls rushed toward the garden doors.

Outside, the strawberry plants were glowing faintly beneath the evening light.

And slowly...

The soil began moving.

Chapter Four

The Underground Door

The dirt shifted in tiny ripples.

Melia grabbed Ariana’s sleeve immediately.

“Nope.”

Mai stepped closer excitedly.

“YES.”

Rosberry hopped onto Melia’s shoulder.

“They’re opening the rootway.”

“The WHAT?”

But before she could explain, the garden soil split apart.

Not violently.

Slowly.

Like a secret door opening underground.

Golden light glowed beneath the earth.

Warm air floated upward carrying the smell of strawberries and flowers and fresh rain.

Mai’s eyes widened.

“There’s a world under the garden.”

Tiny glowing creatures fluttered upward from below like floating petals.

Ariana crouched carefully near the opening.

Far beneath them, winding tunnels stretched underground.

And somewhere deep below...

Music echoed softly through the roots.

Rosberry adjusted her leafy hat importantly.

“Well,” she announced, “this is either very good or very terrible.”

“Which one?” Melia asked nervously.

“I haven’t decided yet.”

Chapter Five

The Berry Market

The tunnel carried them deep beneath the garden.

Roots twisted overhead like wooden bridges.

Glowing berries hung from ceilings like lanterns.

Tiny mushroom houses lined the pathways.

And everywhere they looked...

Plants moved.

A carrot wearing glasses hurried past carrying books.

A sleepy potato snoozed beside a teacup.

Two peas argued loudly inside a pod.

Mai stared in complete amazement.

“This is the greatest place ever.”

Rosberry puffed proudly.

“Welcome to the Underground Gardens.”

Melia spotted huge glowing strawberries growing beside a sparkling river.

“They’re enormous.”

“Royal strawberries,” Rosberry explained importantly.

“Very dramatic.”

One immediately fainted into the river.

“Told you,” she said.

Suddenly bells rang through the tunnels.

Every creature froze.

The glowing lights dimmed slightly.

Then whispers spread nervously through the market.

“The roots are cracking.”

“The darkness is spreading.”

“The Heart Blossom is dying.”

Rosberry’s tiny face turned pale.

“Oh no.”

Ariana looked down at her carefully.

“What’s the Heart Blossom?”

The strawberry swallowed hard.

“The magic keeping the underground alive.”

Chapter Six

The Heart Blossom

Rosberry led the girls quickly through the glowing tunnels.

The deeper they travelled, the quieter everything became.

Fewer creatures wandered the pathways now.

The cheerful music had faded.

Even the glowing berries overhead seemed dimmer.

Mai looked around nervously.

“I don’t like this part.”

“Neither do the roots,” Rosberry admitted quietly.

Ahead of them stood enormous twisting vines wrapped around a giant doorway made from tree roots.

Golden petals were carved into the wood.

But several carvings had turned dark and cracked.

Ariana frowned.

“The darkness is spreading from here.”

Rosberry nodded slowly.

“This leads to the Heart Blossom.”

Melia looked at her.

“So why is it dying?”

Rosberry hesitated.

Then sighed dramatically.

“Because someone stole the Sun Seed.”

Mai blinked.

“The WHAT?”

“The Sun Seed,” Rosberry repeated. “It powers the Heart Blossom. Without it, the underground gardens slowly lose their magic.”

Melia folded her arms.

“Okay. That sounds extremely important.”

“It IS extremely important,” Rosberry squeaked.

Suddenly...

THUD.

Something heavy moved behind the giant doors.

The girls froze instantly.

Another thud echoed through the tunnels.

Then came a low growling sound.

Mai slowly pointed.

“There is absolutely something in there.”

Rosberry swallowed nervously.

“Yes.”

“What is it?”

“I was hoping you wouldn’t ask that.”

Chapter Seven

The Root Beast

The giant root doors creaked open slowly.

Very slowly.

The growling became louder.

Melia took one careful step backwards.

“No thank you.”

But before anyone could run, a huge shape burst through the doorway.

Mai screamed.

Rosberry screamed louder.

The creature charged forward through the glowing mist.

Roots twisted around its body like tangled fur.

Its giant leafy tail smashed through flowerpots behind it.

And its glowing eyes locked onto them.

“It’s the Root Beast!” Rosberry cried.

The creature let out another deep growl.

Then suddenly stopped.

It sniffed the air.

Sniffed again.

And slowly tilted its giant head toward Melia’s pocket.

Everyone stared.

Very carefully, Melia reached into her pocket.

Inside sat half a strawberry biscuit she’d forgotten about earlier.

The beast’s eyes widened instantly.

“Oh,” Ariana said slowly.

“It wants the biscuit.”

Melia blinked.

“That’s it?”

The giant beast sat down heavily like an oversized puppy.

Its leafy tail thumped loudly against the ground.

Mai stared.

“It’s actually kind of cute.”

The Root Beast sneezed suddenly.

Leaves exploded everywhere.

Rosberry brushed dirt off her face angrily.

“I nearly died.”

The beast nudged Melia gently with its nose.

She carefully offered the biscuit piece.

The creature gobbled it up happily.

Then rolled onto its back for belly rubs.

Mai immediately ran over.

“I LOVE HIM.”

Rosberry crossed her tiny arms.

“He once ate my cousin.”

Everyone gasped.

Rosberry paused.

“Well... emotionally.”

Chapter Eight

The Missing Sun Seed

Inside the chamber, the Heart Blossom towered above them.

It was enormous.

Its glowing petals stretched across the ceiling like giant soft wings.

But dark cracks spread across several petals.

Black vines curled around the roots beneath it.

And floating in the centre where the Sun Seed should have been...

Was nothing.

Mai looked up sadly.

“It’s beautiful.”

“It used to glow much brighter,” Rosberry whispered.

The Root Beast wandered around the chamber sniffing loudly.

Melia crouched beside the cracked roots.

“So somebody stole the Sun Seed?”

Rosberry nodded.

“Without it, the Heart Blossom cannot fully heal the underground gardens.”

Ariana narrowed her eyes thoughtfully.

“But who would steal it?”

Before Rosberry could answer...

SNORT.

Everyone turned.

The Root Beast pawed at a pile of overturned flowerpots in the corner.

Then sneezed dramatically again.

A tiny golden glow rolled out from beneath the pots.

The girls gasped.

“The Sun Seed!”

Mai darted forward and picked it up carefully.

The tiny glowing seed pulsed warmly in her hands.

Rosberry blinked in confusion.

“It was here the whole time?”

A sleepy voice suddenly muttered nearby.

“Well obviously.”

The girls jumped.

From beneath a blanket beside the wall, the potato from the market slowly sat up yawning.

“You lot dropped it earlier when you came running through.”

Melia stared.

“You had it the WHOLE TIME?”

The potato shrugged sleepily.

“I was using it as a nightlight.”

Chapter Nine

The Healing Song

Rosberry carefully carried the glowing Sun Seed toward the Heart Blossom.

The underground garden had become strangely quiet.

Almost like everything was waiting.

The giant flower’s petals trembled weakly overhead.

“Will this fix it?” Mai whispered.

“I hope so,” Rosberry admitted.

The tiny strawberry climbed onto one of the roots dramatically.

Then raised the Sun Seed high above her head.

“I shall now perform the ancient healing ceremony.”

Melia looked suspicious.

“Do you actually know what you’re doing?”

“Absolutely.”

Rosberry paused.

“I think.”

The Root Beast whimpered nervously.

The potato slowly pulled his blanket over his face.

“This is going to go wrong,” he mumbled.

Rosberry placed the Sun Seed carefully into the centre of the flower.

For one second...

Nothing happened.

Then suddenly the whole chamber shook.

Golden light exploded through the roots.

Wind rushed through the tunnels.

The Heart Blossom glowed brighter than before.

But the cracked petals still remained dark around the edges.

Rosberry’s smile faded.

“It’s not enough.”

The light flickered weakly again.

Mai looked worried.

“What else does it need?”

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Ariana slowly looked toward her sisters.

“I think maybe,” she said softly, “it needs people who care about it.”

Melia nodded slowly.

The girls stepped toward the glowing flower together.

And gently placed their hands against the nearest petal.

The warmth spread instantly beneath their fingers.

The Heart Blossom pulsed softly.

Like it was alive.

Like it recognised them.

Then somewhere deep beneath the roots...

Something growled.

Chapter Ten

The Last Petal

The Heart Blossom glowed weakly in the centre of the underground garden.

Its enormous petals drooped sadly.

Dark cracks spread through the glowing roots beneath it.

The whole cavern felt colder now.

Rosberry stood quietly beside the girls.

“We’re too late,” she whispered.

“No we’re not,” Ariana said firmly.

Melia stepped closer to the blossom carefully.

“What does it need?”

Rosberry looked up at the giant flower.

“Kindness,” she said softly.

Mai frowned.

“That’s it?”

“Well... friendship helps too. And courage. And hope. And maybe a tiny bit of singing.”

“No singing,” Mum said immediately from behind them.

Nobody had even noticed she’d followed them underground.

Rosberry sighed.

“Worth asking.”

Melia gently placed her hand against one glowing petal.

Mai and Ariana placed theirs beside hers.

At first, nothing happened.

Then slowly...

A soft golden light spread beneath their hands.

Tiny cracks in the petals began sealing themselves shut.

The glowing roots untangled beneath the ground.

The colour returned little by little.

Pink.

Gold.

Warm glowing red.

All around them the underground garden brightened.

The strawberries sparkled again.

The mushrooms lit up.

The tiny creatures cheered loudly.

“It’s working!” Mai shouted.

The Heart Blossom slowly lifted its final drooping petal.

Almost healed.

Almost.

Then suddenly...

GROOOOOOWL.

Everybody froze.

Mai grabbed Melia.

Melia grabbed Ariana.

Rosberry screamed louder than everyone.

From behind a giant root, something round rolled forward angrily.

It was the sleepy potato from the market.

Mud clung to his little face.

His tiny blanket dragged behind him.

“You woke me UP,” he grumbled sleepily.

The girls stared for one second.

Then all three burst out laughing in relief.

“We thought you were a monster!” Mai giggled.

“We’re really sorry,” Ariana said kindly.

“We didn’t see you there,” Melia added.

The potato blinked sleepily.

“Oh.”

The three girls bent down and gave him a careful group hug.

The potato’s grumpy expression slowly softened.

“Well...” he mumbled. “I suppose it was an accident.”

At that exact moment...

The final petal of the Heart Blossom burst into warm golden light.

The whole underground garden shimmered beautifully.

Rosberry wiped away a dramatic tear.

“She’s healed.”

By the time they climbed back through the garden tunnel, the sky above was turning soft pink with sunrise.

The girls ran into the kitchen excitedly.

“MUM GUESS WHAT HAPPENED.”

“There was a glowing flower!”

“And a potato!”

“And Rosberry screamed the loudest!”

“I did NOT,” Rosberry argued from Ariana’s pocket.

The girls all talked at once so loudly that Mum finally covered her ears.

“STOP,” she laughed. “One at a time!”

The girls burst into giggles.

Even Mum started laughing too.

And as the sun shone through the kitchen window, the excited storytelling began.
