THE CHICKEN WHO THOUGHT SHE WAS A DRAGON

THE CHICKEN WHO THOUGHT SHE WAS A DRAGON

Intro

Everyone in Featherbottom Farm knew Daisy was a chicken.

Except Daisy.

Daisy was absolutely, completely, one hundred percent convinced she was a dragon.

She wore a dragon cape.

She collected shiny treasures.

She roared at vegetables.

She guarded a pile of pebbles she called her "legendary treasure hoard."

And every morning she climbed onto a hay bale and attempted to breathe fire.

The problem?

The only thing that came out was feathers.

Lots and lots of feathers.

Most animals thought Daisy was completely bonkers.

Then one day a mysterious glowing golden egg crashes into the farm.

Suddenly Daisy is convinced this is her chance to prove she really is a dragon.

Soon she finds herself leading the most ridiculous adventure Featherbottom Farm has ever seen, alongside a sheep who is scared of absolutely everything, a goat who keeps eating important clues, and a duck detective who believes every mystery is connected.

Can Daisy finally prove she's a dragon?

Or will she discover that being brave, kind, and helping others is far more important than breathing fire?

Chapter One

Definitely A Dragon

Everyone in Featherbottom Farm knew Daisy was a chicken.

Except Daisy.

Daisy believed she was a dragon.

Not a little bit.

Not occasionally.

Every second of every day.

She wore a purple cape made from an old picnic blanket.

She collected shiny buttons.

She slept on top of seventeen pebbles she called her treasure hoard.

And every morning she climbed onto the tallest hay bale on the farm.

"ROOOOOOOOAR!"

The animals looked up.

A tiny feather floated from Daisy's beak.

Silence.

Another feather drifted down.

More silence.

Daisy nodded proudly.

"Excellent fire breathing."

A cow chewing grass blinked slowly.

"That was a feather."

"It was a fiery feather."

The cow went back to eating.

Daisy sighed.

Nobody appreciated dragons anymore.

Chapter Two

The Emergency Meeting

Daisy called an emergency meeting.

Nobody knew why.

Nobody wanted to attend.

But Daisy had placed biscuits on the chairs.

So everyone came.

Wooliam the sheep arrived first.

He was already nervous.

"Why are we meeting?"

"I don't know."

"That's not reassuring."

Gary the goat arrived next.

Halfway through eating the invitation.

"Good paper," he announced.

Detective Quackers waddled in carrying a notebook.

"Interesting."

"What is?" asked Wooliam.

"Everything."

The meeting officially began.

Daisy stood on a wooden crate.

"Friends."

Nobody was her friend.

"But continue," said Gary.

"As you know, I am a dragon."

Groans echoed around the room.

"And therefore I need a dragon cave."

The animals stared.

"What?"

"A cave."

"For dragon things."

"What dragon things?"

Daisy paused.

"I'll work that out later."

Chapter Three

The Glowing Egg

The following morning something crashed into the farm.

BOOM.

Animals scattered.

Chickens screamed.

The pigs hid.

Wooliam fainted.

Twice.

When the dust cleared, a giant golden egg sat in the middle of the field.

It glowed softly.

Sparkles drifted around it.

Nobody moved.

Then Daisy gasped.

"The Dragon Council has contacted me."

"What?" asked Gary.

"The Dragon Council."

"There is no Dragon Council."

"Exactly what somebody hiding a Dragon Council would say."

The egg shimmered.

Detective Quackers adjusted his hat.

"This is officially a mystery."

He loved mysteries.

Especially mysteries that weren't actually mysteries.

Chapter Four

Gary Eats The Evidence

Detective Quackers began investigating.

He measured the egg.

He drew maps.

He interviewed three ducks.

Then he made a very important discovery.

Footprints.

Large footprints.

Leading away from the egg.

"A clue!" he announced.

Everyone gathered around.

The footprints could help solve everything.

Then Gary ate them.

Silence.

"What did you just do?" whispered Quackers.

Gary swallowed.

"What?"

"The footprints!"

"Oh."

"You ATE them."

"I thought they were decorative."

Detective Quackers stared at the sky.

Sometimes being a detective was difficult.

Very difficult.

Especially when your witnesses kept eating the evidence.

Chapter Five

The Egg Hatches

That evening the golden egg began wobbling.

Tiny cracks appeared.

Animals gathered around nervously.

Wooliam hid behind a bucket.

Then behind another bucket.

Then behind a third bucket.

"Can someone tell me when it's over?"

CRACK.

The shell split.

CRACK.

More pieces fell away.

The glow became brighter.

Everyone held their breath.

Then...

POP!

A tiny purple dragon tumbled out.

It blinked.

It stretched.

It yawned.

Then it looked directly at Daisy.

The baby dragon's eyes widened.

Daisy's eyes widened.

The dragon pointed.

"Mama!"

The entire farm froze.

Daisy nearly fell over.

The dragon ran straight toward her.

"MAMA!"

"I'm not your mother!"

The dragon hugged her leg.

"MAMA!"

Daisy looked around desperately.

Nobody helped.

Gary was eating eggshells.

Wooliam had fainted again.

Detective Quackers was writing furiously.

"Most shocking mystery ever," he whispered.

Daisy stared down at the baby dragon.

The baby dragon stared back.

Then smiled.

And sneezed.

A giant burst of glitter exploded into Daisy's face.

The adventure had officially begun.

Chapter Six

Mama Dragon

The next morning Daisy woke up to find the baby dragon sitting on her head.

"Mama!"

Daisy screamed.

The dragon screamed.

Wooliam screamed because everyone else screamed.

Gary woke up and screamed because he thought screaming looked fun.

The baby dragon smiled.

"Mama!"

"I am NOT your mama!"

The dragon thought for a moment.

Then nodded.

"Okay, Mama."

Daisy groaned.

This was going to be a very long day.

The baby dragon followed her everywhere.

To breakfast.

To the pond.

To her treasure pile.

Even to the toilet.

"Privacy!" shouted Daisy.

The dragon blinked.

Then sat outside the door waiting.

"Mama?"

Daisy buried her face in her wings.

Chapter Seven

Dragon Training School

"If I'm stuck with a dragon," said Daisy, "then I shall train it."

The farm animals gathered to watch.

Mostly because they expected disaster.

Daisy stood proudly in her cape.

"Lesson One. Roaring."

The baby dragon nodded seriously.

Daisy inhaled.

"ROOOOOOOAR!"

The dragon inhaled.

A giant fireball shot across the field.

The scarecrow exploded.

Everyone froze.

A hat slowly floated from the sky.

Daisy blinked.

The dragon smiled proudly.

"Good roar?"

The animals stared.

"You can actually breathe fire?" asked Daisy.

The dragon nodded.

"Yep."

Daisy sat down.

This was deeply unfair.

Chapter Eight

Detective Quackers Solves Nothing

Detective Quackers had been investigating all week.

His notebook now contained:

• One drawing of a potato.

• Three drawings of ducks.

• A shopping list.

• A recipe for soup.

And one important note.

"Dragon probably came from somewhere."

He called another emergency meeting.

"I have solved the mystery."

Everyone leaned forward.

"The dragon came from an egg."

Silence.

Gary slowly clapped.

"Brilliant."

"I know."

"That explains everything."

"Exactly."

Daisy sighed.

Detective Quackers was the worst detective in history.

Then suddenly...

The baby dragon looked toward the distant mountains.

And began crying.

Chapter Nine

The Real Dragon

That night a shadow flew over the farm.

A huge shadow.

Bigger than the barn.

Bigger than the windmill.

Bigger than Gary after eating six watermelons.

Everyone looked up.

Something enormous circled above them.

Wooliam fainted before seeing it.

The creature landed with a giant THUD.

Dust flew everywhere.

The animals stared.

A giant purple dragon stood before them.

Her scales sparkled beneath the moonlight.

Her golden eyes searched the farm.

Then landed on the baby dragon.

The baby dragon gasped.

"MUMMY!"

The giant dragon gasped.

"MY BABY!"

They raced toward each other.

And hugged.

The farm animals all sighed in relief.

Well...

Everyone except Daisy.

She suddenly felt a little sad.

Chapter Ten

The Bravest Dragon

The next morning the giant dragon prepared to leave.

The baby dragon climbed onto her back.

Before leaving, the baby dragon ran to Daisy.

"You best mama chicken dragon."

Daisy smiled.

"Thanks."

The baby dragon hugged her tightly.

Then handed her something shiny.

A single golden dragon scale.

"For treasure hoard."

Daisy stared at it.

It was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen.

The giant dragon bowed her head.

"You protected my child."

Daisy puffed out her chest proudly.

"That is what dragons do."

The giant dragon smiled.

"Yes."

Then she paused.

"And chickens."

For once, Daisy didn't argue.

As the dragons disappeared into the clouds, the farm animals gathered around her.

"You know," said Wooliam, "you were very brave."

"You really helped that baby dragon," said Quackers.

Gary nodded.

"You are definitely something special."

Daisy looked at the golden scale.

Then smiled.

Maybe she wasn't a dragon.

Maybe she never would be.

But she had protected someone.

Helped someone.

And been brave when it mattered.

Which felt pretty dragon-like to her.

Then Gary ate half her treasure pile.

The moment was ruined.

The End.

Little Lesson:

You do not have to be something else to be special. Sometimes the best thing you can be is yourself. 💜🐔🐉
