THE SNOWFLAKE WISH

THE SNOWFLAKE WISH

✨ Inspired by a magical story idea created by Alaïa, May 2026 💜

Five year old Mai only meant to make a silly little wish.

Standing in the snow with freezing fingers and rosy cheeks, she whispered to a falling snowflake:

“I wish, I wish I was a giraffe.”

But the snowflake had other plans.

Instead of becoming a tall graceful giraffe...

Mai turns into a tiny sea otter.

In the middle of winter.

Now she’s cold, confused, terrified of the icy water, and completely lost in the snowy woods. But just when she thinks things cannot get worse, she meets an unexpected friend.

Ariana.

The same magical girl who once discovered the wonky butterfly.

Together, they uncover snow magic, shape shifting wishes, and one very chaotic sloth transformation that definitely does not behave the way sloths are supposed to.

As the sisters search for each other through sparkling forests and snowy rivers, Mai begins to realise something important:

Maybe being human, with warm hands to hold and sisters to laugh with, was magical all along.

Chapter One

The Snowflake Wish

Snow had fallen all afternoon.

The garden looked completely different now. The grass had vanished beneath thick white blankets, the trees glittered silver, and every rooftop looked like it had been dusted with icing sugar.

Mai stood in the middle of it all wearing two scarves, fluffy gloves, and boots that squeaked every time she walked.

“I can’t feel my nose,” she announced dramatically.

Ariana laughed from near the garden gate.

“That’s because your nose is freezing.”

Melia crouched nearby making tiny snow animals along the wall.

Mai stuck her tongue out playfully.

Then she looked upward.

Snowflakes drifted slowly through the evening sky.

One landed softly on her mitten.

It sparkled strangely.

Almost glowing.

Mai smiled.

“I wish,” she whispered carefully, “I wish I was a giraffe.”

The snowflake melted instantly.

A gust of icy wind spun around her.

The world suddenly tilted sideways.

Her boots vanished.

Her gloves disappeared.

And before Mai could even scream properly...

SPLASH.

She landed belly first in the freezing stream behind the garden.

Only now she was tiny.

Very tiny.

And furry.

Mai lifted little brown paws out of the water slowly.

“Oh no.”

A shiny otter nose stared back at her from the icy stream.

Chapter Two

The Otter Who Hated Snow

Mai scrambled out of the freezing water immediately.

“Nope. Nope. Absolutely not.”

Snow clung to her whiskers.

Her tiny otter paws slipped everywhere.

“This is the WORST giraffe ever.”

The stream crackled softly with thin sheets of ice along the edges. Snowflakes landed on her fur and melted instantly.

Mai shook herself violently.

Water sprayed everywhere.

She looked around nervously.

The garden suddenly seemed enormous.

The fence looked taller than a castle wall.

And worst of all...

She was alone.

“Ariana?” she called.

But it came out as tiny squeaky chirps.

Mai’s little otter heart pounded harder.

The woods beyond the garden looked darker now. The snow made everything quiet in a strange way, like the whole world was holding its breath.

Then something moved nearby.

Crunch crunch crunch.

Mai froze.

A shadow shuffled between the snowy bushes.

“Oh dear,” said a voice gently. “You’re not supposed to be out here alone.”

Mai stared.

An enormous snowy owl blinked down at her kindly.

Then the owl shimmered with gold light...

And turned into Ariana.

Chapter Three

Ariana And The Snow Magic

Mai nearly fainted from relief.

“Ariana!”

Tiny otter squeaks burst from her mouth again.

Ariana crouched beside her carefully.

“I know it’s you,” she said softly. “The little worried eyebrows gave it away.”

Mai threw herself dramatically into Ariana’s arms.

“Well,” Ariana said, laughing slightly, “you’re surprisingly slippery.”

Mai pointed accusingly at the sky.

“The snowflake lied to me.”

Ariana nodded thoughtfully.

“Winter magic can be unpredictable.”

“That’s not comforting.”

Ariana wrapped her scarf gently around the tiny otter.

“Better?”

Mai sniffled.

“A little.”

Snowflakes drifted around them as they walked through the woods together.

The trees glowed faint blue beneath the snow.

Tiny lights flickered beneath the frozen bushes.

Magic hummed quietly everywhere.

Then Mai stopped suddenly.

“Wait.”

Ariana turned.

“What is it?”

Mai pointed toward strange footprints crossing the snow ahead of them.

They looked enormous.

Round.

And very definitely not human.

Something deep in the woods growled softly.

Chapter Four

The Creature In The Snow

Mai climbed onto Ariana’s shoulder immediately.

“Nope.”

The growl echoed again through the trees.

Low.

Rumbly.

Ariana stepped carefully toward the footprints.

Snow crunched beneath her boots.

Then a huge furry shape burst from the bushes.

Mai screamed.

Ariana jumped backward.

The creature skidded straight past them...

Slamming face first into a snowbank.

There was silence.

Then a muffled voice groaned:

“I hate branches.”

The furry creature slowly lifted its head.

It had sleepy eyes.

Long arms.

And snow stuck all over its face.

Mai blinked.

“A sloth?”

The sloth shimmered with gold light.

Then suddenly Melia sat there in the snow instead.

Her curly hair was full of twigs.

“I knew it was you!” Mai squeaked excitedly.

Melia looked deeply offended.

“I was climbing gracefully until the tree betrayed me.”

Ariana burst out laughing.

“You’re supposed to be slow.”

“I AM slow,” Melia argued. “The snow made me panic fast.”

Mai rolled into the snow giggling.

Soon all three sisters were laughing so hard none of them could breathe properly.

Even the forest somehow felt warmer.

Chapter Five

The Fastest Sloth In The World

Melia transformed again accidentally while sneezing.

One second she was human.

The next she was a sloth hanging upside down from a snowy branch.

Only unlike normal sloths...

She moved terrifyingly fast.

“WHY AM I ZOOMING?!” she yelled while swinging wildly between trees.

Mai squealed with laughter.

Ariana nearly fell over trying not to laugh herself.

Melia zipped past them upside down like a furry blur.

Snow exploded everywhere behind her.

“This is NOT natural!”

Mai transformed briefly back into her otter form from excitement and slid happily across the frozen stream.

For a little while, none of them worried about magic going wrong anymore.

They built snow creatures.

Made frozen footprints.

And chased glowing snowflakes through the woods together.

But slowly, the golden shimmer around them began fading.

Ariana noticed first.

“The magic’s wearing off.”

Mai looked down sadly at her little otter paws.

Melia stopped swinging from the trees.

For a second, all three sisters went quiet.

Then Ariana smiled softly.

“Maybe turning back isn’t a bad thing.”

Mai frowned slightly.

“But being magical was fun.”

“It was,” Ariana agreed. “But so is being us.”

Snowflakes drifted gently around them.

And together, hand in hand beneath the glowing winter sky, the three sisters walked home.

Chapter Six

The Snowflake Woods

The next morning, snow still covered everything.

Mai pressed her face against the window excitedly.

“It’s still magical outside.”

Melia appeared beside her carrying toast.

“Or maybe it’s just winter.”

“No,” Mai said very seriously. “Definitely magical.”

Outside, tiny sparkles drifted through the snow like floating fairy dust.

Ariana noticed them too.

“That wasn’t there yesterday.”

The girls bundled into coats and hurried outside together.

The moment Mai stepped into the snow again, a glowing snowflake landed softly on her mitten.

It didn’t melt this time.

Instead, it floated upward and drifted toward the woods behind the garden.

As if it wanted them to follow.

Melia narrowed her eyes suspiciously.

“This is exactly how people end up cursed in stories.”

“Good thing we’re already cursed,” Mai replied happily.

The snowflake twirled ahead through the trees.

Deeper.

Deeper.

Until the sisters reached a hidden clearing glowing silver beneath the snow.

And standing in the middle of it...

Was a giant frozen doorway made entirely of ice.

Chapter Seven

The Ice Door

The frozen doorway shimmered softly.

Tiny snowflakes swirled inside it like a snowstorm trapped behind glass.

Mai poked it carefully.

Immediately, the whole thing sneezed snow at her.

She gasped.

“The DOOR sneezed.”

Melia stepped backward.

“Nope.”

Ariana brushed snow from the icy frame thoughtfully.

Words slowly appeared across the surface.

ONLY THOSE WHO LAUGH TOGETHER MAY ENTER.

Mai grinned immediately.

“That’s easy.”

Melia folded her arms.

“It’s suspiciously easy.”

The doorway remained still.

Then suddenly, from somewhere behind them, a tiny squeaky voice shouted:

“YOUR SISTER LOOKS LIKE A POTATO IN THAT HAT.”

Mai exploded into laughter.

Melia gasped dramatically.

“I DO NOT.”

Ariana laughed too hard to answer.

The frozen doorway glowed brighter.

Then slowly creaked open.

Warm golden light spilled into the snowy clearing beyond.

And somewhere inside...

Music floated softly through the air.

Chapter Eight

The Winter Festival

The doorway led to the most magical place the sisters had ever seen.

Lanterns made from ice flowers hung from glowing trees.

Snow rabbits hopped through the streets carrying tiny scarves.

Hot chocolate rivers flowed beneath sparkling bridges.

And magical creatures danced through the snow while musicians played instruments carved from crystal.

Mai stared open mouthed.

“This is the greatest day of my life.”

A tiny fox wearing earmuffs handed Melia a cinnamon bun almost bigger than her face.

Ariana smiled softly watching her sisters run ahead laughing.

For the first time since the magic started, everything felt peaceful instead of confusing.

Then music suddenly stopped.

The whole festival went quiet.

A tall snowy figure stepped into the square.

A woman made entirely from swirling snowflakes and silver light.

“The Winter Keeper,” whispered the fox nervously.

The glowing woman looked directly at Mai.

“You made the snowflake wish.”

Mai slowly nodded.

The Winter Keeper smiled gently.

“And winter heard you.”

Chapter Nine

The Last Wish

The Winter Keeper led the sisters toward a frozen pond glowing beneath the moonlight.

Snowflakes drifted around her like floating stars.

“When magic answers a wish,” she explained softly, “it listens carefully. But sometimes... not correctly.”

Mai looked down at her boots.

“So that’s why I became an otter instead of a giraffe?”

The Winter Keeper nodded.

“You wished for wonder. Not height.”

Mai thought about that quietly.

Being an otter had been scary.

But also funny.

And exciting.

And somehow wonderful too.

The Winter Keeper lifted one glowing hand.

“One final wish remains.”

Mai’s eyes widened.

“A real giraffe this time?”

Melia burst into laughter.

Ariana smiled.

But after a moment, Mai shook her head.

“I don’t think so.”

The Winter Keeper looked surprised.

Mai glanced at her sisters.

“I already had the best adventure.”

The snow around them glowed warmly.

Then the Winter Keeper touched each sister gently on the forehead.

Magic shimmered through the air one final time.

Chapter Ten

Little Human Hands

The next morning, the snow had stopped.

Sunlight glittered across rooftops and melting icicles.

Everything looked normal again.

Mostly.

Mai stretched her fingers happily.

“Human hands are useful.”

Melia wriggled her toes inside fluffy socks.

“And normal walking is underrated.”

Ariana laughed softly from the kitchen doorway.

The sisters spent the whole morning together.

They made pancakes shaped like animals.

Built tiny snow creatures in the garden.

And drank hot chocolate beside the window while snowflakes drifted outside.

Mai held one tiny snowflake carefully in her palm.

This time, she didn’t make a wish.

She simply smiled at it.

Because she understood something now.

Magic wasn’t only about turning into animals or glowing forests or enchanted snow.

Sometimes magic was warm hands.

Laughter echoing through the house.

Sisters staying close together.

And feeling completely safe exactly as you are.

Outside the window, one snowflake twirled strangely through the air.

Almost like it waved goodbye before disappearing into the winter sky.
