Chapter 1

Far out in the warm blue waters of northern Australia, a young bull shark named Kai darted between colourful coral reefs, chasing tiny bubbles that floated towards the surface.

Unlike most young sharks, Kai wasn't interested in practising scary faces or sneaking up on fish.

He preferred playing games.

He especially loved tag.

One sunny morning, Kai spotted something silver flashing through the water.

It was a young dolphin.

She spun through the waves, leapt into the air, splashed back down, then laughed as she raced away.

Kai couldn't help himself.

He swam after her.

From the cliffs above, pelicans watched the chase.

"Oh dear," one pelican squawked.

"That poor dolphin is being hunted!"

Within minutes, the rumour spread across the coastline.

"A shark is chasing a dolphin!"

Everyone looked towards the sea.

But then something unexpected happened.

The dolphin stopped, turned around, and gently bumped Kai on the nose.

"You're too slow!" she giggled.

Kai laughed.

"I almost had you!"

The two burst into laughter before swimming side by side as if they had known each other forever.

"My name's Kai," said the young shark.

"I'm Luma," replied the dolphin with a smile.

"Want another race?"

"You'll lose."

"We'll see about that!"

Off they shot through the sparkling water, leaving a trail of bubbles behind them.

The pelicans blinked in confusion.

Chapter 2

The next morning, Kai and Luma met again beneath a giant arch of coral.

"Ready?" asked Luma.

"For what?" Kai grinned.

"The Bubble Dash!"

Before Kai could answer, Luma darted away.

Kai chased after her, weaving around sea fans, coral towers and swaying seaweed.

They circled one another again and again until neither could remember who was chasing whom.

Nearby, a group of turtles watched in amazement.

"I've never seen anything like this," said one.

"They're best friends," another whispered.

"I thought sharks and dolphins were enemies."

Kai heard them and slowed down.

"My mum says not everyone is the same," he explained.

"Some sharks are different. Some dolphins are different. We decide who we want to be."

Luma nodded.

"My mum says the very same thing."

The turtles smiled.

"Well… we rather like watching you two."

Chapter 3

That afternoon, dark water flowed from the winding rivers after heavy rain inland.

Kai sniffed the water.

"Someone's coming."

Moments later, a young crocodile paddled out from the mangrove trees.

He looked around nervously.

"This is much bigger than my river," he muttered.

Luma smiled.

"Hello!"

The crocodile jumped.

"Oh! I didn't see you."

"I'm Luma."

"I'm Kai."

The young crocodile relaxed a little.

"I'm Koru."

"I've never been this far into the sea before."

Kai swam a little closer.

"Want us to show you around?"

Koru's eyes lit up.

"Really?"

"Of course," said Luma.

"Everyone needs a friend when they're somewhere new."

Koru smiled for the first time all day.

"I'd like that."

Chapter 4

The three new friends spent the afternoon exploring together.

Kai showed Koru the colourful coral gardens.

Luma introduced him to playful sea turtles.

Koru took them through winding mangrove roots where tiny fish hid amongst the branches.

"This place is amazing," Kai whispered.

"I've never been inside the mangroves before."

"And I've never seen coral like yours," Koru replied.

"It feels like we're visiting each other's worlds."

They played hide and seek amongst the roots.

Then they floated quietly, watching schools of bright fish shimmer like rainbows beneath the sunlight.

A grumpy old crab shuffled past.

"A shark, a dolphin and a crocodile?"

He shook his claws.

"That's the strangest thing I've ever seen."

The three friends simply smiled.

"It works for us," Luma giggled.

Chapter 5

A few days later, trouble arrived.

A frightened school of fish rushed through the reef.

"They're coming!"

"Hide!"

Kai looked around.

"Who's coming?"

"The crocodiles!" cried one fish.

"They'll eat everything!"

Koru's smile disappeared.

"I wouldn't hurt anyone."

But nobody listened.

The fish disappeared into tiny cracks in the reef.

Even some of the turtles slowly swam away.

Koru lowered his head sadly.

"They don't even know me."

Kai swam beside him.

"We do."

Luma gently rested a fin on Koru's shoulder.

"Sometimes people believe rumours before they know the truth."

Koru gave a small smile.

"I hope one day they'll see who I really am."

Just then, a loud splash echoed from the mangroves.

All three friends turned towards the sound.

Something, or someone, was calling for help.

Chapter 6

Kai, Luma and Koru raced towards the splash.

Caught amongst fallen mangrove branches was a tiny green sea turtle.

He had become tangled in old fishing line that had drifted into the water.

"I can't get free!" the little turtle cried.

Kai carefully bit through one piece of the line.

Luma gently pushed the branches aside with her nose.

Koru used his powerful tail to move a heavy log without hurting anyone.

"Nearly there!" Kai encouraged.

With one final tug, the turtle slipped free.

"I'm free!" he cheered.

His parents hurried over moments later.

"Oh, thank you!" his mother said, tears of relief filling her eyes.

The little turtle pointed proudly.

"It wasn't just the shark or the dolphin."

"The crocodile helped save me too."

The other sea creatures watched quietly.

Perhaps they had judged Koru too quickly.

Chapter 7

News of the rescue spread across the reef.

The fish who had hidden from Koru slowly began swimming closer.

One brave little clownfish spoke first.

"We... we're sorry."

"We thought crocodiles were all dangerous."

Koru smiled kindly.

"I know why you were frightened."

"But everyone deserves a chance before they're judged."

The old crab shuffled over.

"I suppose I was wrong too."

Kai grinned.

"Told you our team worked."

Luma laughed.

"The best team in the whole ocean."

Soon the reef was filled with smiles instead of whispers.

For the first time since arriving, Koru truly felt at home.

Chapter 8

The next morning, the three friends decided to play their favourite game.

"Ocean Tag!" shouted Luma.

Kai counted while Luma and Koru raced away.

"Ten... nine... eight..."

When Kai opened his eyes, both friends had disappeared.

He searched behind coral.

Nothing.

He looked beneath seaweed.

Still nothing.

Then...

"SURPRISE!"

Luma burst from a cloud of bubbles while Koru slowly rose from behind a rock.

Kai laughed so hard he nearly rolled upside down.

"You two cheated!"

"We used teamwork," Luma giggled.

"That's different," Koru added with a wink.

The whole reef echoed with laughter.

Even the octopus clapped all eight arms.

As the sun began to set, the sea turned shades of orange, pink and gold.

Kai, Luma and Koru floated together near the surface.

"I used to think everyone had to be like me," Kai admitted.

"I thought only dolphins understood dolphins," Luma said thoughtfully.

Koru smiled.

"And I thought nobody would ever want to be friends with a crocodile."

Kai nudged him gently.

"I'm glad we were all wrong."

"So am I," Luma replied.

Above them, the pelicans who had started the very first rumour watched the three friends swimming peacefully together.

One pelican chuckled.

"I've learnt something today."

"So have I," another replied.

From that day onwards, visitors often stopped to watch three unlikely friends playing together.

A young bull shark.

A playful dolphin.

A curious crocodile.

Some were surprised.

Some didn't believe it at first.

But after watching Kai, Luma and Koru laughing, helping others and sharing adventures, every doubt slowly disappeared.

The reef became a kinder place because everyone learnt that appearances don't tell the whole story.

Luma would shake her head.
