Chapter 1

The Message Beneath the Waves

The sisters loved collecting shells, watching crabs scuttle across rocks, and spotting fish in the clear water.

But this year felt different.

As Mai paddled near the shore, something shiny floated past her foot.

At first she thought it was a jellyfish.

Many coral reefs were grey instead of colourful.

Sea creatures whispered nervously.

Tarka guided them to the Great Coral Reef.

The sisters immediately noticed something terrible.

Parts of the reef were dying.

Broken coral covered the seabed.

Plastic bags floated between the rocks.

A trapped fish struggled inside an abandoned fishing line.

"Oh no!" cried Mai.

Nearby, an elderly dolphin swam over.

Chapter 6

Tarka led the sisters into a place called the Forest of Plastic.

At least, it used to be a forest.

Long ago, colourful sea plants had swayed gently in the currents.

Now the plants were buried beneath bottles, bags, wrappers, and broken pieces of plastic.

Mai looked horrified.

"It goes on forever."

Tarka nodded sadly.

"Many sea creatures mistake plastic for food."

Suddenly, a young turtle swam past.

A plastic ring was trapped around his shell.

Ariana quickly helped remove it.

The little turtle smiled.

"Thank you!"

Nearby, Melia noticed a seahorse trapped inside a discarded bottle.

Together the sisters helped free dozens of animals.

As they worked, the Ocean Heart sent out a faint pulse of light.
