WHAT IF?

WHAT IF?

Intro

What if clouds were really giant sheep drifting across the sky?

What if whales could fly through the stars?

What if every lost sock ended up in a magical mountain somewhere far away?

And what if there was a hidden world where every question that begins with "What if?" became real?

When a mysterious glowing door appears beneath an ancient hill, one curious child steps through and discovers the incredible What If World.

A place filled with flying whales, upside down zoos, rainbow rivers, pancake forests, and magical creatures that have never existed anywhere else.

But when the world's imagination starts fading away, the child must uncover why before every wonderful idea disappears forever.

Because sometimes the biggest adventures begin with a single question...

What if?

Written for dreamers, explorers, question askers, and children who never stop wondering.

Chapter One

The Door That Shouldn't Exist

It began on the most ordinary Tuesday in history.

The kind of Tuesday where absolutely nothing magical was supposed to happen.

Mai was walking home through the meadow behind her house when she noticed something strange.

Very strange.

A door.

Not a house.

Not a shed.

Just...

A door.

Standing all by itself in the middle of a grassy hill.

Mai blinked.

The door blinked back.

"Nope."

She rubbed her eyes.

The door was still there.

It was round, golden, covered in tiny glowing stars, and had a silver handle shaped like a question mark.

Pinned to the front was a sign.

WHAT IF?

Mai looked around.

Nobody else seemed to notice it.

Not the birds.

Not the rabbits.

Not even the squirrel trying to steal someone's sandwich.

"That's odd."

Then the door slowly creaked open.

By itself.

And a warm voice whispered:

"What if you came inside?"

Mai should probably have run away.

Instead she smiled.

And stepped through.

Chapter Two

The Cloud Sheep Fields

Mai landed face first in a fluffy cloud.

"Pffft!"

She sat up.

Clouds stretched as far as she could see.

Except...

They weren't clouds.

They were sheep.

Thousands of giant floating sheep.

One drifted lazily overhead.

"BAAAAAA."

Another bumped into it.

"Sorry."

"You're always sorry."

"I know."

Mai stared.

The sheep were literally making the clouds.

Every time they bounced, tiny puffs floated into the sky.

One fluffy sheep landed beside her.

"First visit?"

"You can talk?"

The sheep looked confused.

"Can you not?"

"Not usually."

"That sounds difficult."

Mai laughed.

This place was already ridiculous.

Then something enormous flew overhead.

A shadow covered the field.

Mai looked up.

A whale was swimming through the sky.

Chapter Three

The Flying Whale Problem

The whale crashed straight into a rainbow.

THUMP.

The rainbow bent like jelly.

"Oh no."

The whale looked embarrassed.

"Sorry."

Mai blinked.

The whale could talk too.

"What happened?"

The whale sighed.

"I forgot which way was up."

"How?"

The whale thought about it.

"Good question."

The rainbow groaned.

"This happens every week."

Mai couldn't stop laughing.

Then she noticed something.

The whale's glow was flickering.

The rainbow's colours seemed dull.

Even the floating sheep looked less bright.

"What happened to everything?"

The rainbow looked worried.

"The imagination is fading."

Suddenly the whole sky became a little darker.

Chapter Four

Lost Sock Mountain

A floating sheep carried Mai to the next place.

When she arrived, her jaw dropped.

A giant mountain stood before her.

Made entirely of socks.

Millions of them.

Stripy socks.

Spotty socks.

Tiny socks.

Gigantic socks.

A sock wearing another sock as a hat.

Mai had questions.

Many questions.

At the top of the mountain sat a tiny old sock with glasses.

"Welcome."

"You're a sock."

"Correct."

"You can talk."

"Also correct."

Mai pointed around.

"Where do all these come from?"

The old sock smiled.

"Lost laundry baskets."

Of course they did.

Then he became serious.

"The mountain is shrinking."

Mai looked closer.

He was right.

The colourful glow was disappearing.

Something was stealing imagination.

Chapter Five

The Imagination Thief

That night Mai followed a trail of fading sparkles.

The trail led into a forest of glowing pancake trees.

Actual pancakes grew from branches.

One tree dropped a pancake.

SPLAT.

A squirrel caught it.

"Breakfast!"

Mai continued deeper into the forest.

Then she saw it.

A shadow.

Moving between the trees.

Collecting glowing pieces of imagination.

The shadow carried a giant sack.

Every time it stole a glowing spark, colours faded around it.

Flowers became dull.

Trees stopped sparkling.

Even the pancakes looked sad.

Mai hid behind a bush.

The shadow stopped.

Slowly turned.

And looked straight at her.

Two glowing eyes appeared beneath its hood.

"Uh oh."

The shadow smiled.

"You weren't supposed to find me."

And suddenly the chase began. ✨🌈🧦🐋

Chapter Six

The Chase Through Pancake Forest

Mai ran.

The shadow ran.

The pancake trees wobbled.

Pancakes rained from the sky.

SPLAT.

One landed on Mai's head.

Another landed on the shadow.

A third landed on a rabbit.

"Best day ever!" shouted the rabbit.

Mai kept running.

The shadow darted between glowing trees.

Just when it seemed about to escape, something huge dropped from above.

THUMP.

A flying whale.

The same whale from earlier.

"Need a lift?" he asked.

"YES!"

Mai climbed aboard.

The whale launched into the air.

Below them, the shadow disappeared into the darkness.

But not before Mai saw something important.

A silver badge pinned to its cloak.

The badge was shaped like a question mark.

Chapter Seven

The Upside Down Zoo

The whale carried Mai to the Upside Down Zoo.

Everything there was backwards.

Giraffes walked on clouds.

Penguins flew.

Monkeys swam through the sky.

Fish sat in trees reading books.

One fish looked up.

"Excuse me."

"What?"

"You're standing the wrong way up."

Mai looked around.

Apparently she was.

The zoo keeper, a giant rabbit wearing spectacles, listened carefully to Mai's story.

"The Imagination Thief?"

He frowned.

"Oh dear."

"You know who it is?"

The rabbit nodded.

"We call him the Doubter."

Mai shivered.

"The Doubter?"

The rabbit sighed.

"He steals imagination because he doesn't believe in impossible things."

Chapter Eight

The River of Colours

The next clue led Mai to the River of Colours.

Usually it sparkled with every colour imaginable.

Today it was fading.

Large patches had become grey.

The river looked tired.

"He's been here."

"The Doubter?" asked Mai.

The river nodded sadly.

"He steals wonder."

Mai sat quietly.

"Why?"

The river swirled gently.

"Because he stopped asking questions."

Mai thought about that.

When people stop wondering...

When they stop imagining...

Magic disappears.

Suddenly the water glowed.

A hidden path appeared beneath the river.

The final path.

Leading to the Doubter's castle.

Chapter Nine

The Castle of Forgotten Questions

The castle stood on a lonely hill.

Grey.

Silent.

Colourless.

No flowers grew there.

No butterflies flew there.

No laughter echoed there.

Mai pushed open the giant doors.

Inside were jars.

Thousands of jars.

Each one contained a glowing question.

What if dragons loved butterflies?

What if stars sang lullabies?

What if unicorns thought humans were mythical?

What if trees could dance?

The Doubter appeared.

His cloak fluttered behind him.

"You should not be here."

"Why are you stealing imagination?"

The Doubter looked around sadly.

"Because imagination hurts."

Mai frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"I stopped believing in impossible things long ago."

He looked at the jars.

"If nobody imagines, nobody gets disappointed."

For a moment, Mai almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

Then she saw the sadness in every jar.

And knew this had to stop.

Chapter Ten

The Biggest What If

Mai stepped forward.

"What if you're wrong?"

The Doubter blinked.

"What?"

"What if imagination isn't something to lose?"

Mai pointed toward the jars.

"What if imagination is what helps people dream?"

The jars flickered.

"What if imagination helps people invent things?"

More jars glowed.

"What if imagination helps people be brave?"

The castle trembled.

"What if imagination helps people hope?"

Suddenly every jar burst open.

WHOOSH!

Millions of glowing questions exploded into the sky.

Colours returned.

The river sparkled.

The pancake trees glowed.

The flying whales danced.

The cloud sheep bounced happily.

The entire What If World came alive again.

The Doubter stared upward.

For the first time in many years...

He smiled.

A tiny smile.

"What if..." he whispered.

Mai grinned.

"Exactly."

The world erupted into celebration.

That evening, Mai returned home through the magical door.

Before it closed, the voice whispered one final question.

"What if this isn't the end of the adventure?"

Mai smiled.

Because she knew the answer.

Every adventure begins with a question.

And there would always be another one.

The End ✨

Little Lesson

💜 Never stop asking questions.

💙 Never stop wondering.

🩵 Never stop imagining.

Because every invention, every discovery, and every great adventure began with someone asking:

"What if?" 🌈✨⭐
